Right-leaning reactions to the partial disclosure of documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain supporters of the previous administration highlighting the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while different voices expressed frustration over how heavy redactions cast former President Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Administration officials justified the redactions with intense hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a President or the Justice Department been this transparent with the American people about such a sensitive legal issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo describing the redaction process.
Concerns Prompted by Redactions
While the former president's identity and likeness appear in portions of the materials, the widespread redactions raise significant concerns about the information may be hidden behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded greater transparency.
“People are raging and walking away,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the redactions violate the law, and implied that a future Congress may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this document release grossly fails to adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he continued.
Some Rightwing Commentators Swing In Support of the Release
But, some rightwing commentators and Trump loyalists swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—originating from a DOJ led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of documents that are completely redacted, and many of the individuals shown in pictures have their identities blacked out.
But some do not, including high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, allowed certain conservative voices to go on the offensive.
“This is quite rich how the political left falsely accused President Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” wrote conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“New documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been hiding those documents for months only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“The release is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and hide forever. So they can release as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement concluded.
Broader Rightwing Comment Seems Subdued
However, broader comment on the political right was relatively subdued following the disclosure, particularly when compared with the vociferous demands for action that came before the congressional approval to pass a law mandating the documents' release.
Loomer, who not long ago secured media access at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal proponents for a complete release. Earlier this year, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing influencers were provided hard-copy folders of files that included little previously unseen data.
